Now You Can Cook Like a Canadian
Roasted Sugary Rum Bacon. Need I say more? Let me say it again: Roasted Sugary Rum Bacon. Still with me, or have you passed out from the glory of those four beautiful words? Here’s where you can get it: In the brand new, hot-off-the press Chatelaine Modern Classics cookbook.
This is the most hotly anticipated cookbook in Canada. Mention Chatelaine around Canadian women young and old and they will all enthusiastically sing out: “Chatelaine has the best recipes!”
Chatelaine is one of the biggest magazines in Canada, with a readership in the millions. For over eighty years Chatelaine has been justly famous for their delicious, innovative, diligently tested recipes. Unlike some cookbooks, there are no secret ingredients here, nothing you can’t get at your grocery store, and no weird, difficult, or time consuming preparation techniques.
With Chatelaine recipes, you always know you’ll get great results because each recipe goes through a rigorous testing process. Now, most cookbooks are well tested, but this cookbook comes with an extra assurance of accountability: If the food editors ever make a mistake, thousands of Canadian women write, call, and email to scold them for it.
Each of these 250 recipes state exact and realistic preparation and cooking times, so you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into before you start. Because the recipes are developed with the busy working parent in mind, they’re always quick and tasty.
Chatelaine Modern Classics includes a few basic recipes for the novice like Homemade Chicken Broth and Buttermilk Pancakes, but quickly chart lip-smacking unknown territory such as California Sushi-roll Salad and Hearty Middle Eastern Supper Salad. There are some fake-it-till-you-make-it versions of fine French cuisine like Cheater Coq au Vin and Big Batch Bouillabaisse. And in the desserts section you will find to-die-for sweets like Sticky Toffee Pudding with Caramel Sauce and Hazelnut Meringue Cake.
Each recipe has comprehensive nutritional information listing protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre, iron, calcium, sodium, and calories as well as prep time, cooking time, and number of servings. The photos are mouthwatering.
Chatelaine Modern Classics is a great beginner cookbook but experienced cooks and foodies will also find themselves inspired. It will especially please anyone who has to rush home to cook dinner every day. And for the busy parent, this cookbook is a godsend.
And if that doesn’t convince you. I just have four more words: Roasted Sugary Rum Bacon!

I don’t think I even WANT TO KNOW the comprehensive nutritional information for Roasted Sugary Rum Bacon.
All you need to know is that the basic breakdown is: sugar, rum, bacon and LOVE.
Some things are better left unsaid… but actually it’s not that bad because the recipe calls for peameal bacon (what you would call Canadian bacon).
Oh. Yeah, we also call that “ham.”
I do not cook, but I bet Matt could make some dang fine Canadian things for us with this bad boy!
Oh yeah, it’s a brilliant cookbook. My sister in law said that she’d make every single thing in it.
We tried the California Roll Salad on the weekend — it was quick, no fuss, and AMAZING. Tasted just like California rolls!
You know, it can’t be coincidence that I keep reading the first line as “surgery” rum bacon…?
