Lights, Camera, Action: Scene It!

Although it seems almost unbelievable to me now, before I met Matt, I had never played Scene It. I’ve always liked board games, from the gimmicky Mouse Trap of my youth to countless AmeriCorps games of Scattergories. In fact, to this day I have never yet played “original”
Scene It, but I have enjoyed Scene It: Friends Edition, Scene It: Harry Potter, and, best of all the “themed” versions, the magnificent Twilight Scene It.

You haven’t lived until you’ve made your boyfriend play Twilight:Scene It. It features voice work from Carlisle, the Twilight Vampire Dad, also known as Van from “Fastlane”, whose polished elocution lends new depths to the crisp pronunciation of the world “clip”. Although I did make Matt watch the Riff Trax version of all the Twilight Sagas so far, even before he’d witnessed the sparkling and/or ripped shirtlessness for himself, the fun thing about Twilight:Scene It is that there just isn’t that much they can do to provide content, so, even if you’ve never seen the movie, there are plenty of “match up” and “guess the character” blurs that anyone can guess at. Prior to seeing the film, Matt won at least three games, so there you go.

Technically, we don’t actually own Twilight: Scene It, but Matt’s sister is coming back to town for Thanksgiving, and I suspect she’ll be bringing it back with her.

Now, we recently got two versions designed for the Xbox 360: Lights Camera Action and Box Office Smash. They improve the Scene It Experience in that a) they ditch the board – nobody cares about the “board” part of a game designed around movie clips, and it streamlines gameplay and b) it allows for Buzz-In Technology. The first version we bought (used), didn’t come with buzzers, and the regular controllers work just fine. Still, I am so sincere about this, and I’m a girl , and I don’t think I’ve ever particularly cared about the game controllers I’ve used, although I am so glad they’re wireless now, but for reals, yo, the buzzers improve gameplay immeasurably. It’s just fun to “buzz” in, and it really improves your response times. Plus, the Xbox versions lets you rack up huge points and awards you random bonuses for things like being the slowest to answer, or stealing a point from another player. It also adds to the interactive experience by letting the game voice over guy to recognize and/or heckle specific teams.

The game segments are fun and there’s something for every kind of player: the guy who knows the date of every film released, your sister who can recognize a yearbook celebrity at 50 paces, your neighbor who goes nuts for anagrams, and of course everyone who loves movies and likes to yell out answers. The game play is similar for both Xbox versions of the games, but I prefer the voice over guy from Lights Camera Action; he’s smarmy but sounds like a real person. The “good” and “bad” guys from the next version are just sort of grating.

So, to sum up: all Scene It games listed above are super fun times, and the buzzers for the Xbox version are highly recommended. Round up your pals and play a round or three tonight!

Just another, quite definitive reason I need an Xbox 360. And let’s not forget that Matt and I were pretty drunk when we walked down to the store SPECIFICALLY to buy Twilight Scene It!

I remembered that it was on sale for like ten bucks at the Blockbuster Video down the street! Grated, I was pretty drunk, but I also recall COMPLETELY PWNING YOU at Twilight Scene It.
