You can watch it with kids but don’t have to

I have to watch a lot of kid TV and much of it is dreadful. If I ever see Captain Feathersword of the Wiggles in person, I’m going to punch him in the crotch with no hesitation. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Phineas and Ferb has improved my quality of life, and not just because the show features a platypus secret agent. Here are the top five reasons why you should watch it:

  • The creators are Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, who both wrote for the 90’s gem Rocko’s Modern Life.
  • Guest stars galore: Tim Curry, Ben Stiller, Kevin Smith, Tommy Chong, Cloris Leachman and Tina Fey, just to name a few.
  • There are jokes for adults, but not dirty jokes that you really hope your kids won’t question you about.
  • It’s educational in a way PBS isn’t. The show centers around two step-brothers making the most out of every day of summer vacation. Phineas and Ferb build a roller coaster in their back yard. They invent a bubble that kids can float around in. They make a giant snow machine to create an alternate season called “Swinter”. The boys exhibit boundless creativity.
  • The cast:

Phineas is voiced by Vincent Martella, Greg from Everybody Hates Chris.

  • Ferb is voiced by Thomas Sangster, Simon from Nanny McPhee

Candace is voiced by Ashley Tisdale, that chick from a lot of teen stuff. I haven’t really seen her other work, but she can really sing.

Mom is voiced by Caroline Rhea- she’s done lots of cool stuff including Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

There are plenty of other cool people in the cast, but my favorite is the voice of Dad. It’s Richard O’Brien, writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (he also played Riff Raff in the film adaptation). If that’s not cool as hell, I don’t know what is.

Phineas and Ferb has great music, running jokes and catch phrases. It’s a show you can enjoy alone or with the nearest four-year-old. It’s the kind of animated series that only comes around once a decade. No matter your breeding status, you should check it out.

Penni Jones is the author of The Utopia of Noah Lazarus. She spends her days chasing preschoolers (her own children, not random preschoolers) and spends her nights reading and writing until she passes out from exhaustion and red wine.

Yesssss Phineas and Ferb rule! My little sister and her husband bought themselves the first season on DVD and watch it after they put their daughter to bed.

Also, that kid’s head is really triangular.
