Seattle Geekly: Local Flavor, Global Appeal
The best thing about Seattle-Geekly.com is that you don’t have to live in Seattle to get something great out of their podcasts. I have enjoyed their interviews with various sci-fi and horror writers and people like the curator of the Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum, Shannon’s reviews of hideous horror films, Matt’s book and game reviews, and their promos for events like Epic Game Day!. Their web page, facebook and twitter feeds are a great resource, both entertaining and informative. They have contributed immeasurably to a sense of geek community – from PAX tweet-ups, to helping you find a gang ready to play some table top games, hunt up a monster movie fest, or score some buzz on a new geek band.
The worst thing about them is that they’re going to hang up the microphone, and May 12, 2011 will be their last show.
I will admit that I felt a real sense of loss when I heard the news – but I understand that hustle alone doesn’t make the podcast gig a financially viable venue. I know they sink a lot of their own capital into keeping the rest of us knee-deep in tasty information, and that a lot of organization, time and muscle go into prepping each and every show. The fact that they have over 5K followers on twitter tells you that they’re doing something right, and that they’ll be greatly missed.
Our friend Geoff put my Matt in touch with Shannon and Matt over two years ago, and I think that first “real” interview made him feel that he’d actually arrived in the publishing world – he’d written a book, and these kids had read it and liked it enough to talk to him about it and broadcast that conversation to the world. He was legit! Later, we caught up with them at our first NorWesCon, and they snuck us into one of the Pro Parties. We met them again later at GameStorm and they showed us the wonder of Tsuro. Shannon put Matt on his most well-attended panel at NorWesCon this year: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse! And she co-paneled with him on the burning question of Batman Vs. Superman: Who would REALLY win in a fight? (The answer of course is WONDER WOMAN.)
Matt and Shannon, I tip my hat to you, and I pour a little Jack on the ground for my homies; don’t stay away, you guys. I have high hopes that the Geeks will rise again!
