Twitch City – Lick Molly Parker now!

Let’s just get one thing out of the way here. The main reason Twitch City is so great is that Molly Parker is lickable. Not likable (though she’s that too), but lick-able, in that she must be licked.

I am sure that everyone in the world will agree with me. Some will add that Callum Keith Rennie must also be licked, and I can’t argue with that. Don McKellar, though? Not so lickable, as much as I respect him.

Now that we have my sexual fantasies out of the way, here’s why Twitch City is amazing television:

1. They spent their entire budget on talent. Fantastic direction by the amazing Bruce McDonald, director of Pontypool and Hard Core Logo (post upcoming!). Terrific acting by the aforementioned lickable and non-lickable people. Cameos by several Kids in the Hall and the great Mr. Al Waxman.

2. That talent included writers. Don McKellar spends his time not being licked by embodying an acting god, creating bizarre shows like Twitch City, writing Broadway musicals, and having random cameos in movies like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He also wrote The Red Violin and the screen adaption of Blindness. The man can’t be hosed down.

He’s a superb writer. He created Twitch City. You’d think that would be enough for one man, but no, he’s an achiever. Applause. Standing ovation.

3. It’s beyond quirky. Canadian TV shows can occasionally get away with being really freaking screwy simply because the stakes are so low — there’s very little money to be made.

Twitch City is about Curtis (Don McKellar), a repulsive agoraphobic slacker. He never leaves the house and is addicted to TV. The episodes deal with him scamming new, shortlived roommates in various ways. He makes doormat Hope (Molly Parker) into his personal gopher. The first season culminates in an apocalyptic TV remote battle with his frenemy Newbie (Callum Keith Rennie). The battle is a cross between the dance-off from Zoolander and the infrared bounce-off-the-plate-in-mom’s-head zinger from The Adventures of Pete & Pete.

The second season… well, I won’t spoil it. It’s even better than the first. Essential viewing!

I love this show more than most things on God’s earth.

PS: in my heart, I lick Don McKellar at least thrice a day.

I took Matt to see The Drowsy Chaperone and he liked it – the version we saw starred the sleazy Anna’s life- stealing boyfriend! It was totally great!

We adored The Drowsy Chaperone. Is there anything that talented young man can’t do?

  4. Laura Shapiro says:

I have had a lot of people praise this show to me, and enjoyed vids made from it, but this is the first time I’ve actually wanted to watch the show.

Hmm, something to put in the queue…
