Weeds: One Bad Mother
And I don’t mean in that Shaft “shut your mouth” kind of way. Nancy Botwin is a horrible mother, and I am putty in the palm of her pot-slinging hands. In the first season of Weeds, we meet the grieving Botwin family who recently lost their patriarch Judah (Jeffrey Dean Morgan — how come he always plays dead guys?) to a heart attack. Before Judah’s untimely demise, the well-to-do... read more

My (so-called) secret shame
The way I remember it, I was just out of high school when My So-Called Life originally aired. Math and Wikipedia insist that I was actually 23, but the wounds must have still been fresh... read more

White Nights, No Tights
I saw Black Swan last week: it was visually fantastic, emotionally freaky and overwrought, and it cranked the Lesbian to 11. It was a strangely satisfying film that a) made you really appreciate the work dancers put into performing and b) made you very glad that Barbara Hershey isn’t your mom. It’ll probably win a peck of Golden Globes and/or Oscar nods, and it is certainly a worthy film,... read more

Hey, have you seen my ghost?
It is straight-up disgraceful that I haven’t written about One Week before today. The movie is damn near perfect, and I love it with my whole heart and soul and all my stuff. In it, a young man named Ben learns that despite his feeling of good health, he’s afflicted with stage four cancer affecting his blood, liver and lymph nodes. It’s an aggressive strain, and he’s only got... read more

Touching Evil: hunted by a freak
There’s this one particular moment on Antiques Roadshow that always gets me: when the interviewee brags about the restoration work she’s done on her lamp or armoire or whatnot, only to learn that it was worth enough money for her to buy her own manmade island in Dubai, but now, thanks to her, it’s just another fugly piece of junk. It’s a metaphor, if you ask me. Because this is one... read more

Strangest Favorite Ever
I have my patterns, so by now this story is familiar to you. It starts with me being all: Will Ferrell? Are you kidding? I mean, yes, he was like, totally fine in the epic drama Zoolander and stuff, but, he was a little screamy and, you know… he’s probably just not my thing. I’m not up for bathing in poop jokes. And then a very good friend, Ana in this case, advises me to pick up... read more

I’ve never felt this way before
I watched Dirty Dancing again last night and was again wowed by what a brilliant love story it is. The movie is such a classic I won’t even try to go into all the reasons it’s fantastic, because I’m guessing a lot of you already know them. Everything about this movie is perfect, basically. It’s also the ultimate feel-good movie. My roommate was having a bad day yesterday, and I... read more
